Hey, what’s YOUR most used emoji?

Everyone has their fave go-to emoji, right? The one that best describes your reactions to things, whether you’re a cynical Sue, an amused Alan or purely see the the world through love-tinged specs.

This World Emoji Day, we set out to see what the most-used emojis of 2022 were and whether they’ve changed much over the last few years. So we took to the social channels and asked that very question. Then we compared our 2022 findings to the most-used emoji results of 2020 and 2021, when we posed the very same question.

Have people changed their emoji-ing ways? Read on to find out…

Most-used emoji icons – a bit of emoji history

There’s no denying that emoji’s have changed the way we communicate. Although it may seem like they’ve been around forever, emojis only first appeared on Japanese mobile phones in the late 90’s and these days they’re a global norm, with more emojis being added to the mix every year.

“Face with tears of joy” – Oxford Dictionary’s “Word of the Year 2015”

Something which started so innocently, a colon and an open bracket and a few x’s for the real love, has now turned into a global language. No need for Duo Lingo where emojis are involved, although not much of a basis to get too deep and meaningful.

Emojis have become such a huge part of our daily communication, that the Oxford dictionary itself declared the “Face with tears of joy” emoji as Word of the Year in 2015. Although the last time I checked, a crying-laughing face isn’t a word, is it?!

Emojis have become so big that we now have an annual World Emoji Day. And why does this special day fall on 17th July? Well, if you look closer at the calendar emoji symbol, what date do you see? Fun fact of the day!

But what are emojis actually about?

Emoji’s are so widely used in our digital communications that a WhatsApp message could seem somewhat soulless, or even offensive without one – a “see you later” has got nothing on a “see you later😘”. With that said, emojis are no doubt a godsend to those “less is more” texters among us. Who needs to conjure up complicated dialogue when an emoji speaks a thousand words? Indeedio.

The words alone just don’t seem to hack it anymore for you hard-core emojiers. What’s more, the constantly evolving emoji library continues to come up with more and more ways to help us express ourselves, whether we’re kind of laughing or whether we’re laughing so hard that we have tears coming out of our eyes – yeah, they really need to come up with a mildly amused/lightly chuckling emoji.

Granted, they’re not always true to form, but we all still have our most used emojis…

Top 5 Most-Used Emoji Icons of 2022

We took to our social media channels to find discover which emojis were most-used by our OJOers in 2022, to see if there had been any emoji-movement over last couple of years. Take a look at this year’s top 5 most-used emojis 2022…

5. Grinning face with smiling eyes

A personal favourite of my own, the grinning face with smiling eyes emoji, according to the emoji dictionary: expresses joy, happiness, cheerfulness, or excitement. Such a good all-rounder it gives that good feeling without going overboard. You all seem to like to it too, making it the 5th most-used emoji among our OJOers.

4. Smiling face with heart eyes

Love is in the air, or the eyes it seems for many of you. Voted as your 5th most-used emoji in 2020 and 2nd most-used in 2021, this lovey dovey heart-eyed variety ranked as the 4th most used emoji of our OJOers in 2022. Aaawwww, you guys.

3. Smiling face with hearts

A bunch of hopeless romantics, you lot. And we love it🥰. Voted as the the 3rd most-used emoji in 2022, the smiling face with hearts is there to convey “warm and fuzzy feelings, especially feeling loved or being in love with someone or something“. We’ll take that any day.

2. Face with tears of joy

Previously ranking as the number one most-used emoji in 2020, this popular emoji has claimed the 2nd most-used emoji spot in 2022. With tears streaming down those little yellow cheeks, this emoji actually has you crying because it was that hilarious.  Whether it was that funny or not… is anyone’s guess. But it’s polite way of laughing at people’s mildly amusing jokes, we guess.

1. Zany face

And the top most-used emoji of 2022 goes to… the wackiest, craziest and zaniest emoji of them all – yes, it’s the zany face! You’re havin’ a laugh, havin’ a giggle, and most importantly you’re not taking yourself too seriously with this crazy emoji. Well it’s no surprise that our little zany friend got the vote from so many of you – all in the name of fun and good times, that’s why you’re an OJOer!

Emojis, life just wouldn’t be the same without you. Happy World Emoji Day to one and all!
