Summer just wouldn’t be the same without a massive football tournament. Luckily for us, the Women’s EURO 2022 gets underway this week! England’s ladies will be looking to go one better than the men, who suffered heartbreak in the final this time last year.
With this year’s tournament taking place in England, the Lionesses have home advantage over their rivals. But will that reflect what happens on the pitch? Ahead of the tournament, we’ve taken a look at England’s prospects, as well as who could be standing in their way. Plus, you can take to the pitch yourself with our football-themed slots.
What are England’s chances of winning Women’s EURO 2022?
Not too bad it seems! Despite never having won a major tournament before, England seem to be second favourites to lift the trophy later this month. As host nation they qualified automatically but considering they’re on an 11 game winning run, it’s fair to assume they would have been there regardless.
After reaching the semi-finals five years ago, as well as in the World Cup back in 2019, England know exactly what it takes to reach the latter stages of a tournament. And they’re in good hands under head coach Sarina Weigman, who led Netherlands to glory in EURO 2017, as well as to the final in the most recent World Cup.
When are England playing at Women’s EURO 2022?
The Lionesses will open proceedings against Austria on Wednesday. If all goes well, they’ll hopefully be closing the tournament too! The final takes place at Wembley on Sunday 31st July.
England v Austria – 8pm on Wednesday 6th July (Old Trafford)England v Norway – 8pm on Monday 11th July (Brighton & Hove)Northern Ireland v England – 8pm on Friday 15th July (Southampton)
Who are England’s competition?
Although they’ve never won a tournament before, Spain are the clear favourites to go all the way this summer. They’ll be the ones to watch, led by Barcelona captain and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas.
Elsewhere, France are also looking for a first trophy, while the Netherlands will be keen to avenge their World Cup final disappointment. Germany have won this tournament a record eight times. However, they’ve disappointed in recent outings and have not come out on top since 2013.
